Previous Daily Devotional About being sent into the fire… John 20:21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." (NIV) Jesus knew the consequences of sending out others in His name. Jesus knew in advance the hardship, pain, suffering, and torment every person He sent out would face. Perhaps we might ask what kind of God this is. What kind of God sends others out into the fire knowing in advance they will suffer for His cause? Jesus knew more about what was to happen in the lives of those He sent out than just those issues concerned with the suffering they were to endure. Jesus knew more about what was to come than the suffering of His followers because Jesus also knew about the glory the people who follow Him would produce in the lives and hearts of others. None of us wants to suffer, but we must all keep in mind our ultimate goal in life is to glorify God. To glorify Him, we may have to suffer. When we lose sight of His suffering upon the cross, our own suffering becomes important. Likewise, when we see Christ suffering upon the cross then our own suffering becomes totally unimportant compared to His suffering. We cannot escape the human propensity that makes us want to avoid suffering. What we can do is remember Christ does indeed give us peace. For no suffering is as great as suffering without peace. Every suffering is bearable when we have peace. Every suffering is bearable when we have the peace of Christ within us. |
