A Daily Devotional

About confession that sets us free...

1 John 1: 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV)

Confession is talking. Confession is the unloading of the darkness we carry within us. To not confess means we must live in darkness, dirt, and the contamination of our heart and soul. Sin pollutes our souls and destroys our spiritual heart. When we confess, we speak the truth about our life and ourselves. This self-confrontation or honesty about our life brings with it a purification or cleansing from God.

We can walk around on earth in sinful ignorance but there is a cost. We can pretend we have not gone astray from what God wants from us, but we cannot pretend without paying a heavy price. Confession requires not only the confrontation of our falling short but also the speaking up about our falling down. Confession is not a matter of inflicting a wound upon ourselves. Confession does not hurt us. Instead of hurting us, confession begins a healing process in us. With confession, we are set free and unburdened by speaking about the sins, mistakes, and errors haunting us like ghosts in the night. Confession takes us out of the prison created by our sin. After we confess, we are then free to walk in the Light of God’s love and grace.
