Previous Daily Devotional About wisdom and fear "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, " Proverbs 9:10 (RSV) When we hear the word "fear" we think of times when we were terrified to the point of being shaky and weak. This passage from Proverbs is not telling us to be so afraid of God we start to shake. What this verse tells us is that respect for the power of God is the beginning of living a smart life. If you did not fear or respect God, and you went about your business of life with no regard for what God wanted from you then surely bad consequences would emerge. The love God has for you and the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross -should humble you into a state of overwhelming awe and reverence. When we experience that overwhelming awe and reverence then we are willing to go where God leads us and guides us. Without deep reverence and respect we want to go our own way and "do our own thing." We want things in life done the way we want it done without any regard (or respect) for what is Godly. Ungodly behavior appears in the lives of people who do not truly fear or respect the power of God. Knowing that we are all resting in the palm of Gods hand is of tremendous comfort. This knowing should also instill in us the utmost respect and a godly fear that causes us to want to lead a Christ-like life. The love of God which appears in our hearts through the Holy Spirit begins when we experience overwhelming awe and reverence. |
