A Daily Devotional

About finding freedom in telling the truth...

1 John 1: 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV)

Confession carries with it the idea of telling the truth. You don’t tell a lie when you really and truly confess. When you really and truly confess you tell the truth. Telling the truth in confession has a purification effect upon us. Telling the truth in confession sets us free from the bondage of sin put upon us by our sin. When we do not confess and tell the truth we put ourselves in a terrible darkness from which there is no escape except telling the truth. When we do not confess and tell the truth we impose upon our heart, mind, and soul the reality of being in chains we cannot break except by confessing and telling the truth. Confession of the truth is liberating. Confession of the truth permits us to see, think, act, and believe in the reality of our world. Many times the truth is not easy to confront or easy to speak. However, our life is so much better when we confess. Our life is so much richer when we tell truth rather than when we tell a lie. Telling the truth by confessing consistently gives our soul a relief from the daily burdens we bear. Telling the truth by confessing brings us close to God for God is truth. In God there is no darkness. In Jesus, you have someone who will listen to you and who will understand you no matter what you have to say when you confess. In God there is no lie or falsehood. In God there is only redeeming and renewing truth leading to eternal life.
