Previous Daily Devotional About giving in pain 2 Corinthians 8:2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. (NIV) Giving in pain, giving while we suffer pain, and giving in the midst of our deepest
trials may be the severest test of faith. To remain faithful in trials is a hard test
requiring that we bite the bullet. To remain faithful in pain and then give because of our
faith is our greatest test of life. When we are suffering we are turned inward as part of
our natural instincts. When we give in our pain, we have not only gone against our natural
instincts but we have defeated the power of sin and darkness over us. It is the power of
sin and darkness that wants you to think of yourself when you hurt. It is the power of
God's light and love that turns you outward and causes you to give and help others when
pain and suffering overtake you. We must be clear about the motivation for giving. When we
give, we must not give to ease our pain or alleviate our trials. When we give, we must
give because we see the need of others and because we hear the calling of Christ to help
others. The fire of pain that surges through our body and soul may scream at us to take
care of ourselves, but the fire of the Holy Spirit, the voice of the living God, gently
touches our hearts and calls us to give in spite of our momentary needs. |
