Previous Daily Devotional Ephesians 6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. (NIV)About giving respect in the worst conditions (To treat others, including God, with respect means we are to treat them with admiration, approval, and with reverence. When we respect other persons or God, we are to esteem them and pay them homage.) There is a repulsive idea in this verse. The repulsive idea is that of slavery. What we must see in this verse is the mountainous idea of respecting anyone, even someone who owns you as a slave. Pauls letter to the Ephesians was not about abolishing slavery nor was it about maintaining slavery. Pauls letter was about respect and obedience to Christ. Each of us should respect each other. Without respect, there can be no opportunity for a healthy love to exist between us and God or us and another person. When we respect Christ or another person, we do try to win their favor constantly and consistently. |
