Previous Daily Devotional About knowing and not knowing… Acts 9:3 As he (Saul) neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" 5 "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. (NIV) In this verse from the book of Acts, Saul knew but he did not know. Saul knew God was speaking to him but Saul did not know Christ was Lord, or that Christ as God was speaking. In much the same way, we think we know what we know. Sometimes we can be absolutely certain we know what we know. However, we sometimes learn our certainty was nothing but ignorance. To Saul's advantage, Saul did recognize God was speaking. At the sound of God's voice, Saul fell to the ground in humility and subservience. Each of us must learn to do the same thing. Each of us must learn to do as Saul did. Each of us must, at least figuratively, fall to the ground at the sound of the Lord's voice. We must also keep our heart open. Saul's heart was closed off from Christ. Saul did not know Christ was the Son of God. Like many people in our day who do not know Christ as Lord, Saul knew there was a God but not that God had come to earth as Christ. Most of us do not have or do not experience a light from heaven as Paul experienced the Light. However, we do not need to go blind to see the truth. We do not need scales over our eyes to learn that Christ loves us and He came to set us free from our enslaving sin. |
