Leviticus 19:1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: `Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. 3 " `Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God. (NIV)

About respect within the family…

(To treat others, including God, with respect means we treat them with admiration, approval, and with reverence. When we respect other persons or God, we are to esteem them and pay them homage.)

Healthy relationships between two people, between parents and children, between groups, or between nations requires that each party respect the other. God spoke about respecting your mother and father because when the family unit of mother, father, and children breaks down from disrespect, the society breaks down. In His chosen people, if the family units had remained in tact, traditions would have been lost, God’s words would have been lost, and any hope for establishing God’s kingdom on earth through them would have been lost. When one party in a relationship does not respect, admire, honor, or revere the other then war can break out at any moment. In our relationship with God, we are to respect Him. We are to honor and revere His essence. When you do not respect Him, you say by your thoughts and actions He does not count for anything. When you respect God, you are on the first steps of a journey in faith. We cannot believe or trust someone who we do not truly honor, admire, or revere.
