Previous Daily Devotional About rules to live by… Romans 7:8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. 9 Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. (NIV) We all live by rules. Most of us live by rules set forth by our society. Some people choose to live by their own rules. Many people in the world today will say “What rules to live by? You don’t mean all that Christian religious stuff do you? Who wants to live a life where you cannot be free to do what you want, when you want, and how you want?” Accepting Christ as your Savior is a rule you can follow or ignore. Many people make up their own rules about God and Christ. One of the rules people like to make up is “You don’t really have to repent and accept Christ because you can be a basically good person and God will give you a free pass into Heaven after you die.” However, this “free pass” rule has been destroyed. This “free pass” rule was destroyed the minute Christ walked out of the tomb after being dead three days. The new rules set in place by Christ say you can't rationalize your sinfulness. You can't build a hope for eternal life based upon your only following rules you make up or only following rules you like to follow. In addition, you can't build a hope for eternal life based upon your good intentions when all your good intentions point you away from accepting Christ. The reason all the old rules and the rules we make up were destroyed by Christ is because Christ gave His life for you. The old rules were destroyed by Christ because He loved you then and loves you still. Christ's expression of love goes out all over the world and God wants you to always follow His rules as a response to Christ’s love for you.
