Previous Daily Devotional For Christmas

About the shepherd of humanity…

Matthew 2:5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 6" `But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"

We do not often think of rulers as shepherds. We normally think of rulers as persons who wield power and influence. We normally think of rulers as persons who command respect purely by the use of force and power. However, Christ is not a ruler like we normally see in the world. Christ is a ruler like a shepherd. Christ is a ruler who does not call us to allegiance by the wielding of His power and influence. As the shepherd of humanity, Christ is a ruler within our life if we are willing to follow Him and be a member of His flock. The Great Shepherd of humanity did not establish His earthly rule by the force of an army with shields and swords. The Great Shepherd of humanity established His earthly rule by the force of love in the hearts of all those persons willing to follow Him. In the same way, each of us must try with all we have within us to be a shepherd to those around us. Each of us must be persons of gentleness, kindness, caring, and compassion. Each of us must honor His birth, His life, and His sacrifice by continually giving rather than taking. Each of us must worship Him by praying for and helping those who need Him most.
