Previous Daily Devotional About standing firm 1 Peter 5:9 "Resist him (the devil), standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings." (NIV) (Parenthesis added.) Satan has a way of stabbing us and twisting the knife. Some of us suffer greatly in all kinds of ways. Satan knows our weaknesses and will exploit them without mercy. When we try to lead quiet, devout Christian lives, Satan is not pleased. Peter reminds us that our suffering for our faith is not done in isolation. Millions of others around the world are all suffering too. Satan wants us to believe we are the only one who is being bombarded. Satan wants us to feel alone and desperate. Satan wants us to give up, give in, or give over. To be a member of the faith you must resist. You must not give up or give in. You might think that to be a devout Christian there should be some way of avoiding the pain and the suffering. The truth is (and it is not a happy truth) that some times in some places in your life, the only thing you can do is resist. To resist, pray. To resist, kneel at the foot of the Cross. To resist, show the love of God to others, even in your pain and suffering. To resist, be gentle, kind, and forgiving. When you do these things, Satan is then the one who has no defense. When you do the Christ-like things, you win and Christ wins. Not only do you win in the here and now, you also win in your wonderful, infinite future with Christ.
