Previous Daily Devotional About upward belief Mark 9:17 A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not." 19 "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me." 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered. 22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." 23 " `If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." 24 Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" (NIV) The sometimes grim and grinding nature of life can make our belief in God seem to fade away. When our faith begins to move away from a strong and vibrant relationship with Christ, we can bring back the strength and vibrancy as we remind ourselves about how much Christ loves us. When we think and meditate each day, we can strengthen our belief as we count our blessings from God. For when we count our blessings, our doubts begin to fade away, and our faith in Him is renewed when we see His power in our lives. As we see God's power in our life, we have renewed vigor for living and renewed vigor to do His will. When the world begins to crumble before our eyes, we must put His Cross in front of the crumbling world. As we put His Cross before all things, we receive the power of His sacrifice and of His love. As our faith weakens in times of sickness and in times of pain, we can be invigorated. Our will can often be plagued by doubt and uncertainty. However, our will can be invigorated with a new vision of Christ's sacrifice for us and by His call for our sacrifice for Him. In times of our distress, we must remember our belief is grounded upon His hope everlasting, upon His love overflowing, upon His power never ending, and upon His grace abounding. |
