Previous Daily Devotional About what we do Ecclesiastes 2:24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. (NIV) We all spend the minutes of our lives in some kind of activity. We watch television, work, sleep, eat, drive a car, shop, and spend countless hours engulfed in ourselves. Our motivation for what we do produces a result within us. A person who cleans up after others in an industrial plant may hate the work. A person who cleans up after a messy Sunday school class of pre-school children may love the work because the work is done for God. A person who cleans up after others in a homeless shelter may also love the work because he or she does the work for God and as a witness for God. What we do in our lives is not as important as why we do it. Choices have consequences. You can chose to work and spend your time for God or chose to work or spend your time for you. Your driving motivation in life will give you ulcers or peace of mind depending upon who you chose as your real employer. When you work or spend your time for God then God pours out His blessings of wisdom, knowledge, happiness, and peace of mind. When you work or spend your time for yourself, for your selfish reasons, there is a dumbing down of your soul, a numbing of your spirit, an evaporating of your wisdom, and a wretched unhappiness in your soul. |
