I know someone who is having a crisis. With his encouragement, I am using his crisis to help others. When there is no one to talk to (Part 2 of 5) Romans 1:11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong-- 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. (NIV) At the heart of every problem, conflict, sin, and difficulty, there is a larger problem. This larger problem is that we move through life alone. In moving through life alone, we bounce from one minute, hour, week, month, and year to the next. None of us is immune from loneliness. We can own the whole world, its gold, its silver, its diamonds, and we can still be lonely. We can be in abject poverty, near starvation, and still be lonely. When we are lonely, money is not a friend. In some ways, money can be an enemy in loneliness, for money provides deathly ways of assuaging the pain of loneliness. Many times, people who live in homeless shelters, the truly homeless people who are chronically homeless, are less lonely than others because they are with other people who understand them. Loneliness may be the biggest issue in dealing with the homeless because when you put a homeless person into a residential setting and they are alone, they would rather go back out on the street where there are others with whom they can share their life. Although you might think you are alone or have been alone, you were always with Someone. When you thought you were just by yourself, Someone else was there with you. When you go out for a walk, or out shopping by yourself, Someone else is with you. When you are in the car by yourself, Someone else is there with you. The truth is that you have never been alone. You are not alone now. You will never be alone in the future. |
