TOPIC: EMOTION If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge andwisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. Once the emotions have been aroused - a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and the unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love - then we wish for knowledge about the object of our emotional response. -- Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder (1965) Comment: An inanimate object like a book or computer can hold facts. It is the animation or emotions of the soul and spirit that turn the facts into a living example of the Creator. It is very difficult to be wholly joyous or wholly sad on this earth. The comic, when it is human, soon takes upon itself a face of pain; and some of our griefs . . . have their source in weaknesses which must be recognized with smiling compassion as the common inheritance of us all. Joseph Conrad (18571924), Polish-born English novelist. A Personal Record, "A Familiar Preface" (1912).
