Christmas Season Wisdom Minute...

Topic: Christmas Symbol - Poinsettia Plants

The plant is called the "flame leaf" because its leaves turn brilliant red around Christmastime. Poinsettias are also called "The flower of the holy night" in Mexico. The plant became the poinsettia in the United States when Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist, introduced it to Americans around 1830. A Mexican legend tells of a small boy who was to visit the Christ child on Christmas Eve. Sad because he had no gift, The boy knelt to pray. As he rose, a beautiful red-leafed plant grew before him. Joyously, he entered the church to present his scarlet gift to the babe.
