Christmas Symbol - Rosemary
According to two Christian legends, rosemary aided the holy family in its flight
into Egypt. Once, the herb opened its branches to conceal Mary and Jesus from Herod's
soldiers. In another instance, Mary hung some of the Christ child's garments to dry on a
rosemary bush. After the clothes dried, the once white flowers of the rosemary turned
fragrant and blue. For centuries, rosemary was significant during the holidays. Rosemary
was hung in doorways to welcome elves and placed in churches to protect congregations from
evil spirits. "So on the trembling rosemary, she laid them one by one, and strong the
rosemary held them, all morning to the sun" are words from the song "Ballad Of
The Rosemary"
