Persons Of The Bible -- Seth
The name "Seth" means "placed," or
"appointed," or "a substitute" in Hebrew. The name
also means "compensation."
Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve, and was the father of Enos.
(B.C. 3870.) (Gen. 4:25; 5:3, 6:3; 1 Chronicles 1:1)). Seth's mother
gave him this name, "for God," and said, "hath appointed
me [i.e., compensated me with] another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain
slew." Adam handed down to Seth and his descendants the promise of
mercy, faith in which became the distinction of God's children. (Genesis
4:26)
